Winchester First UMC and Winchester First Presbyterian Church will be gathering together to celebrate Ash Wednesday.
What is Ash Wednesday?
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, the forty days (not counting Sundays) before Easter. Traditionally, Lent is a time of preparation and fasting for the holiest of Christian days, Resurrection Sunday, or Easter.
How do you celebrate Ash Wednesday?
It is admittedly a different kind of day. Ash Wednesday is a day when we think about our frailties and mortality (aka, our sin and our death). During the worship service, worshipers may come forward for the sign of the cross to be made on their heads with ashes.
Why do you make a cross with ashes?
The ashes represent our death as spoken in the ancient Liturgy: Remember, mortal, from dust you came to dust you shall return. They also represent our humility. Putting ashes on your head is another ancient way of vividly saying, "I'm sorry." Annointed in humility and mortality, the ashes are shaped in the form of the Cross to remind us of the hope we find in Christ. In his death, we find forgiveness. In his resurrection, we find new life.
